Any Time Can Be a Fresh Start

I love a good fresh start. This is why I love Mondays, New Year’s, my birthday, and sunrise. As a fan of great habits and the continuous process of making/breaking/re-making them, fresh starts give us that extra "oomph" we often need to get something going.

My Mom taught me about the "wheel of the year" which celebrates the movement of the sun in the sky through the equinoxes, the solstices, and the mid-way points in between. To put it more colloquially, she taught me to be a witch and see the changes in nature has proof that the world is a magical place.

Today marks the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere which means we're moving into the time of most increasing light. The day will get longer and the night will get shorter leading up to summer. The months past have had more darkness than light, but we’re now at the time that the light and dark are equal.

This always feels like a great time to plant new intentions to harvest 6 months from now around the Fall Equinox (and no doubt I'll be doing a ritual for that later today).

But I only recently learned that this' is also the beginning of the astrological sign of Aries which is considered the first sign of the zodiac. So in some ways, it's the beginning of a whole new year. Happy New Year!

Part of what I love about working with the moon is with it’s 28(ish)-day cycle, we get a new beginning once a month, but not necessarily on the first of the month. It might come on the Wednesday the 16th or something like that. Even thought it’s not a new week or new month it’s still a new beginning.

The more I learn about the natural cycles the more I see that new beginnings are around us all the time, we just need to look for them. Who's to say that you can't make a life-changing decision after lunch? Or mid-semester? Or right before you take a shower?

Don't think you need to wait for the right time to make change, redirect your life, or start a new habit. Any time is right for that.

Most likely whenever you decide, that's when the time is right anyways.
